North Park withstood the pressure of a rowdy crowd in Watertown, Wisconsin Tuesday and earned a 27-25, 25-20, 25-20 victory over host Maranatha Baptist University Tuesday evening.
Freshman right side hitter Emily Farwell was instrumental as she recorded nine kills without a single error to finish with a .450 hitting percentage. Freshman Lauren Wiltsie threw down a team-high 10 kills and had 12 digs for her eighth double-double of the season and seventh-straight, and Sarah Toth added eight kills. Sophomore Darby Switzer dished out 23 assists and both Karen Rosales and Brittney Garcia each had two serving aces.
NP led 5-1 to start the first set before Maranatha made a comeback with a 9-4 scoring run to take a 10-9 advantage after a kill from Alexis Johnson. The Vikings responded however with a 9-4 run of its own to move ahead 18-14 on a kill from Maddy Barry. An MBU service error then brought NP to set point at 24-21, but the hosts scored three unanswered points to tie it at 24-24. Kills from Kelly Clinton and Toth though finished out the set win for the Vikings.
In the second set, North Park raced to a 12-5 advantage after a kill from Toth, but again Maranatha fought its way back to trim the deficit to 17-14 after a kill from Stacy Reinke. North Park held off the rally however and finished out the set with an 8-6 run.
The Sabercats seemed to find their groove to start the third set as they moved ahead 8-7 on a tip kill block from Alexis Johnson and later a 10-8 advantage on a Reinke kill, but North Park finally silenced the attack and the crowd for that matter when it finished out the set and the match with a 5-3 run, ending it on a kill from Farwell.
North Park (6-6) returns to action this weekend when it competes in the Illinois Wesleyan University Invite. The Vikings face Anderson University at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
