Fifteen offensive rebounds led to 14 second chance points for visiting Carthage College Wednesday night, which powered the Red Men to a 67-60 victory over North Park in CCIW action.
Despite 21 points from sophomore Juwan Henry and a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds from freshman Jordan Robinson in his first game back after the New Year, Carthage held as much as an 18-point advantage and never relinquished the lead in earning its fifth win of the season.
The Red Men started the game strong and held a 35-29 lead at the break. North Park excited the crowd just before halftime and brought a little momentum into the second half when freshman Colin Lake converted a steal and a lay-up just before the first half buzzer, but Carthage opened the second with a 9-0 scoring run and pushed its lead to 49-31 with 14:39 left in the contest.
North Park did trim the deficit to three at 60-57 after it used a 7-0 run on baskets from T.J. Cobbs, Robinson and a three-pointer from Henry, but Carthage held off the rally by converting on 6 of its 7 free throw attempts in the final 27 seconds.
Cameron Van Wyk led the Red Men with 14 points on 7 of 9 shooting and eight rebounds, while Brad Kruse added 12 points and seven rebounds. Kruse also swiped a game-high seven steals.
North Park (8-4, 0-2) looks to rebound when it travels to Rock Island for a 7 p.m. contest with Augustana College Saturday night.
