North Park overcame some tough adversity at the free throw line Wednesday night to pull out a 63-60 overtime victory over visiting Carthage College in CCIW action.
Although the Vikings went to the charity stripe 26 times, they converted on less than 50 percent of their shots (12 of 26) in earning their 11th win of the season.
Sophomore Liz Rehberger bounced back from rough shooting performance against North Central College Jan. 24 and scored a game-high 22 points on 7 of 12 shooting. Amani Davis added 11 points and junior Soly Roman grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
With the Vikings ahead 51-43 on a jumper from Davis with 4:06 left in regulation, Carthage made a furious comeback by piecing together a 9-1 scoring run to tie the game at 52-52. Erin Thomas, who finished with 13 points, hit a tough shot in the lane to knot the score. North Park did have a chance to win it at the buzzer, but Rachel Torres missed a half-court heave as time expired.
Neither team then could create much separation in the extra session as the largest lead either had was four after Torres scored a lay-up with 28 seconds left. Carthage managed to whittle the lead down two at 62-60 after Thomas came up with another big basket for the visitors, but clutch free throw shooting from Davis and Rehberger (3 of 4) in the final 11 seconds sealed the win for NP.
Both teams were nearly even in every category. North Park did force 17 turnovers, creating 11 off steals and scored 17 points off the mistakes. Erin Quinn tallied a team-high 21 points for Carthage.
North Park (11-8, 3-5) returns to action this Saturday when it hosts Augustana College for Viking Crazy Night at 5 p.m. The first 30 NPU students through the doors (w/ a valid NPU student ID) will receive a FREE t-shirt.
