North Park overcame a woeful shooting night with a solid defensive effort to earn a 64-54 victory over host Elmhurst College Wednesday night.
Despite shooting a frigid 25 percent in the second half (6 of 24), the Vikings relied on their superior defensive pressure by forcing 14 turnovers in each half.
Five different Vikings had three or more steals led by four each from Amani Davis and Rachel Torres. Of Elmhurst's 28 miscues, 22 came off NPU steals and the visitors capitalized by scoring 27 points, including 18 in the first half which was a big part of North Park's commanding 41-22 lead at halftime.
Sophomore Liz Rehberger finished with a game-high 20 points as she connected on eight field goals. She also had two steals and a block along with two assists in 33 minutes. Senior Annie Shain came off the bench to tally 10 points as she shot 50 percent from the field, connecting on 4 of 8 attempts, two of which were three-pointers.
North Park enjoyed its largest lead of the night 35-13 after Rehberger buried a three with 5:44 left in the first half. The Vikings pounced in the opening 10 minutes as they raced to a 28-8 lead after a steal and a lay-up from Rehberger, two of North Park's 18 fast break points on the night which was a season-high.
Fiona McMahon led the Bluejays with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. She was the lone Bluejay in double-figure scoring. Elmhurst fell to 9-8 on the season.
North Park (10-7, 2-4) returns to action Saturday when it hosts North Central College for a 5 p.m. contest.
