North Park couldn't have asked for a better day and an even better result in its 2014 women's tennis season opener.

The Vikings dominated in every facet of their game and handed visiting Dominican University a 7-2 loss, bringing the revival of women's tennis at NPU back to an ultimate high.

North Park nearly won all six of its singles matches as Nos. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 all took their opponents in straight sets. Freshman Lisa Daniels, a native of South Africa, had NP's most dominating performance at No. 1 as she went 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Marlee McCabe was just as solid as she defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-1 and Juviel Vinluan took care of business at No. 6 singles, upending her opponent 6-1, 6-4. Also victorious for the Vikings were Garette Gessert at No. 2 (6-4, 6-3) and Marina Fodstad at No. 3 (6-0, 6-4).

At doubles, the No. 1 tandem of Gessert and McCabe proved to be a strong combination as they defeated their opponents 8-3, while Daniels and Fodstad were victorious 8-1 at the No. 2 slot.

Many Viking students, faculty and staff showed their support for the new tennis program by showing school spirit, and even a few former tennis alumni players were in attendance to witness the historic event.

North Park looks to continue its momentum this weekend when it opens College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play with a tri-match against Elmhurst College and Wheaton College at 10 am Saturday in Wheaton.
