A second half defensive adjustment played a huge role for North Park in their 61-47 victory over visiting Kalamazoo College Saturday afternoon.
After the Vikings allowed nearly a 45 percent shooting percentage from the Hornets in the first half, they held Kalamazoo to only 26 percent and 16 total points in the second en route to their fourth-straight win this season.
Sophomore Juwan Henry finished with a game-high 21 points and seven assists as he shot 6 of 16 from the field, including three three-pointers. Freshman Colin Lake added 17 points and four steals, and freshman Jordan Robinson recorded his second double-double of the season as he tallied 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
North Park opened up an early 12-5 advantage after Lake buried a three-pointer and Henry knocked down a pair of free throws, but Kalamazoo fought its way back in the game with a 16-9 scoring run to tie the score at 21-21 on a lay-up from Jake Whitney with 6:41 left in the first half. The Hornets then later took a 31-29 lead into halftime.
The visitors offensive surge didn't last though as North Park immediately overcame the deficit and turned it into a 44-36 lead with a 15-5 spurt highlighted by back-to-back lay-ups from Robinson and junior Michael Hutchinson. NP then pushed its lead to as much as 17 in the second half before a Kalamazoo three-pointer with eight seconds remaining decided the final margin.
In conjunction with their defensive adjustment, North Park forced 10 of Kalamazoo's 13 turnovers in the second half and scored 12 points off the mistakes. Adam Peters led Kalamazoo with 17 points as the Hornets fell to 3-2 on the year.
North Park (4-1) returns to action Saturday, Dec. 13 when it hosts Trine University for a 4 p.m. contest.
