Vikings edge Alma College 72-71

Cobbs, Henry knock down clutch shots

The North Park men's basketball team boasts a roster full of young talent and already they're performing like upperclassmen.

North Park relied on a pair of sophomores to pull out an epic 72-71 victory over visiting Alma College Wednesday night which sent the Vikings to their third-straight win.

Sophomore T.J. Cobbs finished with 11 points and knocked down a clutch three-pointer from the right wing which gave the hosts a 70-69 lead with 41 seconds left, and fellow sophomore Juwan Henry followed with a rebounded basket in the lane to put NP ahead for good before the Scots last attempt at a game-winning three-pointer missed.

Henry, who was coming off a 23-point, 12-assist outing in a 90-66 victory over Illinois College which earned the Chicago native College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Player of the Week honors, poured in 19 points, scoring 10 in the second half. He also had a season-high five steals and four blocks.

Along with Henry, freshman Jordan Robinson tallied a game-high 20 points, his second 20-point performance in the last five games.

After Alma overcame a five-point deficit with a 13-8 scoring run over a four-minute span to capture a 63-60 lead, both teams basically traded baskets in the final three minutes of the contest. Freshman Colin Lake tied the game for NP with a three-pointer from the left of the key, and a three-point play from Cobbs gave the hosts a 67-66 lead with 1:39 left. A three-pointer from Alma's Jason Beckman then pushed the Scots to a 69-67 advantage prior to Cobbs connecting for his only three-pointer of the game.

North Park held a 14-point advantage at 19-5 after Henry buried a three-pointer early in the game, but Alma fought its way back into it and used an 18-7 run to close out the final 7:32 of the first half to seize a 32-31 edge at halftime.

Lake added 11 points as the only other Viking in double-figure scoring while Michael Hutchinson finished with nine. Henry also grabbed nine rebounds for a near double-double. Both Jason and DJ Beckman led the Scots with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Alma fell to 0-6 on the year.

North Park (3-1) returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Kalamazoo College for a 4 p.m. contest.
