Juwan Henry returned to the lineup, four different Vikings scored in double figures and North Park earned its first victory of the young season, a 77-66 triumph over visiting Eureka College Tuesday night in non-conference action.
After a somewhat slow start offensively for the sophomore guard, Henry exploded in the second half and scored 14 of his game-high 21 points. He shot a blistering 57 percent from the floor, including a near perfect night from the three-point line (4 of 5) and had a career-high four blocks.
North Park used a combination of solid defense and transition play to hold off a late Red Devils' rally. Eureka closed within two at 53-51 after Seth Wickert converted a pair of free throws with 9:58 remaining in the contest, but North Park didn't let the visitors draw any closer than six thereafter as NP built its lead to as much as 10 points in the waning seconds before a lay-up from Henry with 11 seconds left decided the final margin.
Along with Henry, the freshmen duo of Colin Lake and Jordan Robinson had another solid performance as they finished with 17 and 16 points, respectively. After a 20-point outing in his first game Robinson had a near double-double as he grabbed seven rebounds to go along with his 16 points. Senior Garrett Gatz added 12 points on 5 of 12 shooting, and sophomore Joe Biko came off the bench to add nine.
North Park built as much as a 13-point lead midway through the first half when Lake connected for a three-pointer on the left wing, but Eureka used an 11-2 scoring run over a seven-minute span to close the gap to 31-27 after 1 of 2 free throws from Ian Saathoff with 1:35 left. North Park held a 35-31 lead at the break.
Eureka suffered its second-straight loss as the Red Devils fell to 1-2 on the year. Wickert led EC with 20 points as four different players finished in double figures for the visitors as well.
North Park (1-1) returns to action Saturday when it hosts Illinois College for a 5 p.m. contest.Â
