Last year the Vikings broke a 42-year losing streak when they defeated Millikin 35-32 in Decatur. This season, they set another record against Millikin, earning their second-straight victory over the Big Blue.
Led by 325 yards on 29 of 53 pass completions from sophomore quarterback T.D. Conway, North Park earned a 26-7 win over visiting Millikin in front of a Homecoming crowd of 2,111 fans at the Holmgren Athletic Complex Saturday. The victory marked only the second time in the history of the NPU program that the Vikings have defeated Millikin in back-to-back seasons. The last was during the 1967 and 1968 campaigns.
North Park's offense dazzled the NPU alumni, families and fans in attendance on a mild sunny day that produced temperatures in the high 60s. The Vikings amassed nearly 530 yards of total offense and scored a touchdown in every quarter.
Conway gave NP the early advantage when he connected with Devin Childress for a 16-yard pass play, which ended an 80-yard drive with 7:36 left in the first quarter. Childress then caught his second TD pass of the day in the second when Conway found the freshman for a seven-yard strike ending a 68-yard drive. The Vikings held a 13-0 lead at halftime as 1 of their 2 point-after-touchdown (PATs) was successful, but NP was far from completing the task.
Saturday's matchup also marked the return of junior wide receiver Dakota Conway, who returned from injury to catch eight passes for 44 yards, including a touchdown in the third quarter from brother TD, a seven-yard strike that ended a 44-yard drive. After Millikin's lone score of the game opened the fourth quarter, North Park added its final TD of the day when Anthony Burton broke free for a 34-yard pass play down the right sideline.
Childress led the Vikings air attack as he had eight catches for 114 yards, while Drew Walkington dominated the ground game, gaining just under 100 yards (92) on 17 carries.
Defensively, Dylan Woods finished with five solo tackles and senior Philip Pendleton had an interception. Woods was also responsible for two pass breakups.
During halftime of the Homecoming contest, the North Park Athletic Department introduced its six newest inductees to the Viking Hall of Fame, highlighted by former head football coach William "Bill" Anderson, who coached the Vikings from 1978-85 and was a member of the historic 1968 team that defeated Millikin 30-0 on its way to a 6-3 record that season.
North Park (1-6, 1-3) returns to action Saturday when it travels to Rock Island for a 1 p.m. contest with Augustana College.
