North Park's bid at making it two-straight victories against host Augustana College Saturday in Rock Island just came up a little short.
The Vikings held a 13-10 lead early in the third quarter and later 20-13, but AC came back with two scores and a field goal to pull out a 26-20 victory for its fourth win of the season.
Sophomore quarterback T.D. Conway threw for three touchdowns and nearly 300 yards (284) as he completed 26 of his 38 attempts, but Augustana used a solid ground game led by 178 yards on 29 carries from Brandon Price. In all, the hosts garnered 367 of their 460 yards on the ground.
North Park overcame an early 10-0 deficit after Conway hooked up with Max Current for his first touchdown of the day, a three-yard pass to Current, ending a 44-yard drive. The Vikings then put together another scoring drive, this time a 78-yard scamper that ended in a nine-yard pass from Conway to Devin Childress with 12:17 left in the third. After an Augustana field goal knotted the score at 13, Conway responded with his third TD pass of the game, finding Childress once again for a 23-yard pass with just under four minutes remaining in the third.
Childress led the Vikings air attack as he had nine catches for 137 yards while Dakota Conway grabbed nine catches for 49 yards. Defensively Brendon Dull had nine solo tackles, and Matt Leibforth eight. Three different Vikings recovered fumbles as well as Joe Butz, Chaun Maiava and Hunter Corrigan all recorded one.
North Park (1-7, 1-4) looks to rebound Saturday when it hosts Carthage College at 1 p.m. The Vikings defeated Carthage 22-20 for Homecoming last season which snapped their 89-game CCIW conference losing streak.
