Vikings upend Carthage 1-0

NP moves to 4-0 in CCIW action

On a night of celebrations for the North Park Vikings, the hosts made sure the Homecoming crowd of nearly 250 went home happy.

Kebba Sanyang scored what ended up being the game-winner for North Park as the Vikings earned a 1-0 win over Carthage College to stay in contention for a regular season College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship as they moved their overall record to 4-0 in league, one game ahead of Wheaton College, which stands at 3-1.

At halftime Coach John Born was also recognized for earning the 200th victory of his career last week in a 3-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington Oct. 15. Director of Athletics Dr. Jack Surridge presented Born with a glass-encased game ball from the historic victory. Born now stands at 201-122-37 in his 20-year career between both North Park and the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

Although the crowd of North Park faithful was mostly lighthearted and cheerful throughout the match, the near opposite could be said for the fierce competition on the field. A total of 10 cards were issued, eight yellow and two red as both teams combined for 28 fouls.

Sanyang's tally came in the 14th minute when he put away his third goal of the season unassisted in the top right corner of the net. The freshman forward was covered briefly by two Carthage defenders, then broke away toward the goal and just beat the keeper with a shot from 10 yards out. Sanyang finished with three shots, two on goal. Sophomore Pedram Tahmi-Masoleh led the Vikings with seven of their 15 total shots, with two coming on target.

Carthage opened the game strong as the Red Men fired eight quick shots in the first 13 minutes of the match to North Park's one, but the lone shot was Sanyang's goal, his second in the last four matches.

North Park (13-3) returns to action this weekend when it travels to Rock Island for a 3:30 p.m. contest with Augustana College.
