North Park held off a rigorous rally from host Alma College Tuesday night to defeat the Scots 79-75 in non-conference action in Michigan.
A 19-point performance from senior Aaron Weaver, who was 5 of 14 from the field, powered NPU to its second win of the season and kept Alma winless through its first five games. Weaver also grabbed 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and the fourth of his North Park career.
North Park overcame a 12-point first-half deficit and closed the gap to 39-37 at halftime with an 18-8 scoring run over the final 5:48 of the half. Weaver scored 12 of his 19 in the first as he was 4 of 9 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers, and two steals. After Alma regained a four-point advantage with 8:14 left in the contest, North Park rebounded and turned the deficit into a 70-66 lead with a 13-5 clip, capped off by a Garrett Gatz three-pointer, over a four-minute span. Alma pieced together a quick 6-1 run to move back in front 72-71 with a little over two minutes left, but North Park used clutch free throw shooting from both junior Reggie McGee and freshman Jay'Quan Lee (a combined 4 of 4) in the final five seconds to hang on for the victory.
Four different Vikings finished in double-figure scoring as Gatz tallied 18 and Henry had 15. Lee added 11 points and stayed in the ballgame despite garnering four fouls. Seven different players came off the bench for NP and out-scored the Scots 26-17. Isaiah Law led Alma with a game-high 30 points.
North Park (2-2) returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Albion College at 4 p.m.
