Firebirds sweep Vikings in pair of close games

Lorenz homers in each game to keep Vikings close

CHICAGO, Ill. -- North Park softball dropped both games of a CCIW doubleheader in Chicago on Wednesday afternoon, falling 3-2 in the opener and 4-2 in Game 2.

Game 1: Carthage 3, North Park 2

Carthage struck first in the top of the first, turning a walk into a run on Olivia Hrist's RBI double for a 1-0 lead. The Firebirds added another in the third after a leadoff double set the table, and Hrist delivered again with an RBI single, as North Park right fielder Sydney Snyder cut down a runner at the plate to limit the damage.

Carthage made it 3-0 in the fifth, using a leadoff walk, a stolen base by Clare Rettler and a productive groundout to bring home a run.

North Park rallied in the sixth. Senior shortstop Kayla Lorenz launched a solo home run as the Blue & Gold looked primed to break through.

Next, the Vikings put together another scoring chance that ended with senior catcher Katie Patton's RBI double to pull within 3-2. North Park couldn't bring home the tying run the rest of the way, though, as Carthage would hang on to the 3-2 win.

Game 2: Carthage 4, North Park 2

Carthage opened the scoring in the first on Hrist's RBI single, but North Park answered immediately. Senior center fielder Kayla Sapolu singled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Bella Frohwirth, and Lorenz crushed a no-doubt two-run homer to give NPU a 2-1 lead.

Carthage tied it in the third as Rettler reached and stole second before scoring on another Hrist RBI single. The Firebirds moved in front in the fifth when Rettler again got on base, advanced into scoring position and eventually scored on a North Park error.

North Park had chances to respond, most notably after Kathryn Keehn's leadoff double in the second and another threat in the fourth but couldn't push a run across. Carthage added an insurance run in the seventh to close out the sweep.
