APPLETON, Wis. -- North Park University softball earned a road split Sunday at Whiting Field, dropping the opener before rebounding with an extra-inning victory against Lawrence University in non-conference play.
Game 1: Lawrence 4, North Park 1
North Park struck first in the opening inning when senior left fielder Eden Baker doubled to left and later scored on senior shortstop Kayla Lorenz's RBI double.
Lawrence answered decisively in the fourth. Gillian Guerriero sparked the rally with a double, Isabella Alfaro followed with a single, and Avery Chilson delivered the key blow with a two-run single to put the Vikings from Appleton ahead. Callie Rozak added an RBI later in the frame to cap the scoring.
Lawrence's Chilson went the distance in the circle, limiting North Park to one run and seven hits to secure the home win.
Game 2: North Park 6, Lawrence 3 (8 innings)
North Park responded in the nightcap thanks to a late push, following four scoreless innings.
After Lawrence plated all three of its runs in the fourth inning, the Vikings chipped away. In the fifth, sophomore Raquel Hare singled up the middle and moved to second on junior Bella Frohwirth's sac bunt. Next, freshman third baseman Chloe Bader knocked one through the left side to plate Hare.
The decisive moment came in the eighth. With a runner aboard, Hare ripped an RBI double to start a three-run surge. Senior Kathryn Keehn followed with an RBI single, and Bader added a sacrifice fly to give North Park the cushion it needed. Hare then closed the door in the bottom of the inning to complete the split.
Eden Baker enjoyed the 40th steal of her career on Sunday, tying Dana Gooris-Wells for the all-time lead at North Park.
