Softball swept in final day of Florida trip

CLERMONT, Fla. -- North Park softball played in its final Florida games on Friday, stumbling twice in an 11-2 loss to Mt. St. Joseph and 6-5 extra-inning heartbreaker to Otterbein.

After falling behind 1-0 in the third against MSJ, North Park briefly answered with a two-run inning sparked by a single from freshman third baseman Chloe Bader. Senior center fielder Kayla Sapolu followed with an RBI double and senior left fielder Eden Baker added an RBI single to tie the game. That would be the Vikings' only scoring frame of the game.

Mt. St. Joseph quickly swung momentum back in its favor with a three-run fourth inning, including a three-run home run from Sydney Hughbanks. The Lions added two more in the fifth behind Avery Wiltermood's two-run homer before breaking the game open in the sixth with a five-run outburst capped by a grand slam from Mackinley Lawson. North Park finished with five hits and was held scoreless after the third in the 11-2 loss.

In Game 2 against Otterbein, North Park pushed the contest into extra innings before falling 6-5 in eight. Otterbein opened with three runs in the first, but North Park responded with a three-run third inning powered by a two-RBI single from senior shortstop Kayla Lorenz and an RBI single from senior catcher Katie Patton. After Otterbein reclaimed the lead in the third, North Park tied the game again in the seventh when Sapolu doubled and scored on another Lorenz single.

With the tiebreaker runner placed in the eighth, North Park took its first lead of the game on a Salyssa Garcia RBI single. Otterbein, however, answered in the bottom half with a bunt single and a hit-by-pitch before Emma Calkins delivered a walk-off two-RBI double. Despite eight hits and another standout effort from Lorenz, the Vikings stranded runners late and could not hold the edge.
