CHICAGO, Ill. -- North Park junior goalkeeper Melker Regland was named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday morning. Regland's recognition marks the third-straight Viking to earn the weekly defensive honor this season, joining fellow keeper Arvid Skoglund (Sept. 15) and sophomore defender David Tracewicz (Sept. 22).
Regland saved eight of the nine shots he saw last week, leading No. 25 North Park to wins over Wisconsin-Platteville (Sept. 30) and Augustana (Oct. 3).
In his first collegiate start, Regland enjoyed a shutout of the Pioneers, saving all six shots he saw last Wednesday. Alongside the win being his first college start, he also collected the first save in a North Park uniform. Regland helped the Vikings to a 2-1 win at Augustana that following Saturday, picking up three more saves along the way.
Regland is credited with three wins this season and had the unique opportunity for a goalkeeper to add an assist when a long ball led to a North Park tally against Wheaton on September 26.
Regland and the Vikings are back in action on Wednesday, October 7, hosting the Carthage Firebirds for more conference action at Holmgren.
