CHICAGO, Ill. -- North Park Football notched their first win of the season this past weekend with numerous impressive performances from players in all three phases of the game. Following their 17-12 victory over Carthage, the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) announced Monday afternoon that junior kicker Robert Kubon and junior linebacker Armando Martinez were named the league's respective Special Teams and Defensive Players of the Week. This marks the first weekly honor for both Viking football players.
Kubon was automatic Saturday afternoon, accounting for 5 of North Park's 17 total points, connecting on both of his extra point opportunities and his lone field goal attempt. Just before the halftime break, Kubon knocked down a 46-yard field goal to extend the Vikings' lead to 10-6. This 46-yarder now sits as the second-longest field goal make in Viking Football history and provided valuable momentum heading into the second half. It's also the longest made field goal for NPU in nearly 60 years.
Martinez was all over the field for North Park's defense, finishing with a game-high 10 total tackles (6 solo, 4 assisted). The junior linebacker provided a lot of energy and aided in holding Carthage's run game to just 42 yards on the ground and 209 yards in total offense. Martinez's afternoon also included a forced fumble, a pass breakup, and helped keep the Firebirds to just 1-for-12 on third down.
Both players will look to keep the energy high heading into the final stretch of their season. Their next match up will be Saturday, October 24th at 1pm when they host Viking rival Augustana College.
