Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Craig Shelton

North Park dominates Wheaton on Homecoming behind three-assist performance by Sjøstedt

Five different Vikings score, Sjøstedt ends night with 3 assists

CHICAGO, Ill. -- North Park Women's Soccer delivered a commanding 5-1 victory over Wheaton College (4-3-3, 1-0) on Saturday evening at the Holmgren Athletic Complex, extending their conference record to 2-0. The win represents the widest margin of victory for the Vikings over the Thunder in program history.

The Vikings set the tone early when senior forward Caroline Sjøstedt scored in the 16th minute off an assist from freshman midfielder Sofia Svensson, marking the only goal of the first half for either team. Svensson passed over to Sjøstedt just outside of the box before the senior forward chopped a shot inside the left post for the go-ahead score.

North Park kept the pressure on in the second half, as Svensson then added a goal in the 53rd minute. Sjøstedt set that goal up and marked her first of three assists in the match when her shot was quickly picked up and sent in off the left foot of Svensson.

Just 43 seconds later, junior midfielder Hannah Björkegren tacked on to the lead with her first goal of the season, assisted by Julia Önnerheim and Sjøstedt. Sjøstedt started things 40 yards out with a centering pass to Önnerheim before a slight touch from Önnerheim allowed Björkegren to bend a shot inside the right post for the third mark of the contest.

Sjøstedt's three assists marks the first time a Viking has reached that total inside conference action, or against any team not named "Mount Mary".

Önnerheim was the next Viking who found the back of the net f in the 61st minute, before junior midfielder Maja Applequist capped the scoring with a strike in the 78th minute.

In goal, Paige MacRitchie anchored the defense with four saves across 90 minutes of play. North Park outshot Wheaton 11-19 but made the most of their chances, scoring on five of eight shots on goal. Wheaton's lone goal came in the 87th minute from Lily Lindquist, assisted by Elizabeth Clawson. Lindquist juked the NPU defense before a soft touch into an open goal snapped the shutout chance.

However, the Vikings enjoyed a 5-1 Homecoming win, securing their largest margin of victory over Wheaton in program history.
