Women's Soccer victorious over Illinois Wesleyan on Homecoming Saturday

Vikings end 25-game losing streak to Titans dating back to 1998

CHICAGO, Ill. -- In the second North Park homecoming weekend Athletic event at Holmgren, the Women's Soccer Team (4-6-1, 0-2-1) faced the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan (3-7-1, 1-1-0).  Early on, the Vikings maintained an advantage in time of possession as well as the number of shots taken.  They rallied off 13 total shots to the Titans' 3, as well as taking 5 corner kicks to the Titans' 2.

Four different players had shots on goal for the Vikings, including senior midfielder Nora Vangsnes with 1, junior midfielder Stine Lie with 1, and junior defender Stella Alvstad.  Howver, it was junior forward Sofie Swedberg who tallied 3 shots on goal and the only goal of the first half in the 20th minute of play.  The Vikings went into halftime confident and up 1-0 over the Titans.

The Vikings continued their possession dominance throughout the second half and ended with double the number of shots and corners than the opposing Titans, with a 20 to 10 shot advantage and 8 to 4 on corners.  Defensively, Junior goalkeeper Philemina Toca posted a shutout with 6 saves as well as the backline wreaking havoc on Titan forwards and midfielders.

In the 58th minute sophomore midfielder Maja Applequist sent a pass into the Titan box that was booted to senior defender Danielle Boudakh, Boudakh was able to control a pass over to Vangsnes who chested the ball into the goal, extending the Viking lead to 2-0.

That would be the only goal for either team in the half and the Women's Soccer Team would go on to win, earning their first conference win of the season.
