North Central Escapes with Two Wins Against the Vikings

The Cardinals win by two runs and one run, despite a Feazelle masterclass in game one and an offensive explosion in the second game

CHICAGO, Ill. – The North Park softball team were eked out by North Central College on a windy Thursday afternoon at the Holmgren Athletic Complex. The Cardinals used impeccable pitching to win the first contest 2-0, before they came from behind to beat the Vikings 9-8 in game two.

Rachael Feazelle pitched the complete game in the first contest, giving up her only earned run the Vikings in the first inning when NCC plated a score on a double. From there, she would allow only four more hits the remainder of the contest, while striking out four and allowing an unearned run in the fifth on a sac fly. Feazelle was also the biggest offensive bright spot for NPU, as she accumulated two hits against Cardinal pitcher Gianna Corban who was stellar with 13 Ks on the day.

Final: North Central 2, North Park 0

Game two had a different feel as both offenses were hard to contain right away. After a leadoff double by Caitlyn Webb, Alyssa Aragon tripled into right field to make it 1-0 NPU. That triple put Aragon in a tie for the single season triple record in NPU history with eight, equal with Dana Gooris and Head Coach Katie Anderson. Alyssa Malicki followed that up with an RBI single and it was 2-0 Vikings.

The Cardinals responded with two, but Isa Santos answered right back with an RBI single up the middle to score Debbie Dinkel and make it 3-2. When NCC again equalized in the bottom of the second, North Park found their biggest offensive outburst in game two when they plated five runs in the top of the third. Malicki sparked it with a solo home run that was her first of the season, evening her with Aragon, Anderson, and Kim Walker for the most home runs in NPU career history, as well as leveling her with Mallory Bieritz for the most Viking homers in a single season with seven.

Katie Creager then picked up her first career RBI with a double, before Maddy Tan and Caitlyn Webb each grabbed RBIs as well. Aragon capped off the five-run inning with a run scoring single that made it 8-3. Aragon is now second all-time in single-season RBIs with 38 in the year, one behind Jessica Mena.

North Central would mount a comeback in the following innings, eventually taking a lead despite a marvelous 2.1 IP, three hit, zero earned run outing from Creager in relief in the circle. The Vikings were able to get the bases loaded down one in the top of the seventh but came up empty on their last chance.

Final: North Central 9, North Park 8
