CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Vikings men's volleyball team played 2 games on Friday, the first of which came against the Benedictine Eagles followed by a match with the Aurora Spartans.
Game 1 saw the Vikings take the 1st set vs. the Eagles, but they would go on to drop the next 3 in an eventual loss. Unforced errors on serves and attacks were ultimately the Vikings' kryptonite. Despite playing just 4 sets, Emmanuel Eugene was able to set a Vikings record with 21 kills. Both Vikings to reach 20 kills in a single game did so in 5 sets, so Eugene's 5.25 kills/set shatters the previous school record. Many of those kills came courtesy of Teddy Gedville, who led the Vikings with 41 assists. On the defensive side, Gedville's 4 blocks were also tied for the team lead with Quinn Robinson and Harrison Potts, while Kaleb Patrick led the team in digs with 13. Noah Salazar, Erik Bullard, and Gedville all recorded 2 aces as well.
Game 2 was a 5-set thriller against the Aurora Spartans, but the Vikings again came up short in an up-and-down performance. The first 2 sets were both decided by 10 points with the two teams splitting victories, and set 3 was a 9-point loss for the Vikings. Following the one-sidedness of the first 3 sets, sets 4 and 5 were decided by just 6 points total. North Park won the 4th by a score of 25-23, but they could not carry the momentum into the 5th and final set as they lost 15-11. Again it was unforced errors that cost the Vikings. North Park's two victorious sets saw them convert on 27 of 55 attacking opportunities, making just 11 errors. Meanwhile, their 3 lost sets registered 20 kills on 69 attacks with 17 errors.
Eugene again led the Vikings in kills with 18, giving him a monstrous 39 across the two games. Eugene split the lead in digs with Erik Bullard, both registering 8. Gedville again led the team with 25 assists, but Alejandro Condoy also recorded double digits with 10.
North Park gets no days off before their next matchup with Dominican on Saturday. The Vikings will travel to River Forest to take on the Stars at 3:00 PM in what marks their 3rd match in 2 days.
