CHICAGO, Ill. -- One goal is all it took for the 16th-ranked Christopher Newport University Captains to earn a win over the North Park University men's soccer team on a hot Sunday afternoon.
Christopher Newport's defense made an impact through the first half of play, holding the Vikings to just four shots and a pair of corner kicks through the first 45.
However, following the halftime break, North Park's offense shifted into high gear. In the 53rd minute, Tobias Lunde and Erik Lundeen sent back-to-back shots towards the net that were blocked and saved by Captain keeper Cole Irvin. The Vikings followed that up with corner kicks by Gustav Ericsson and Peder Olsen, a header from Isac Esfandyari, and a blocked shot off the foot of Ericsson. Unfortunately, none of these shots made it past Irvin.
Just minutes later, Christopher Newport's Chris Schram would take advantage of a free kick just outside of the box, sneaking the shot into the right side of the net for the lone goal of the match.
FINAL: No. 16 Christopher Newport 1, North Park 0
Quick Hits:
- Nine shots and six corners for NPU in second half, no goals
- Keepers Irvin and Alfred Sward each save four shots
