Viking Softball Splits Halted Games Against Wheaton

Malicki tosses simulated complete game - three innings in game one and four in game two

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The North Park University softball team resumed a pair of halted games against the Wheaton College Thunder, dropping the first game 7-6 before winning the second game 5-4. The first game of the day began in the fourth inning, after the April 1 game was halted due to weather. The second game, which started on April 12 at Wheaton but was halted due to darkness, began in the eighth inning.

Game One – Resumed in the 4th Inning

The Vikings hoped to pick up their momentum where they left off nearly a month ago, inheriting a one-out, bases-loaded situation in the top of the fourth inning. Unfortunately, the Thunder induced a groundout and popout to navigate any damage.

After a scoreless fifth inning for both teams, the Thunder scratched the eventual game-winning run in the sixth on a two-out single off the bat of Meiners.

FINAL: Wheaton 7, North Park 6

Game Two - Resumed in the 8th Inning

Both teams decided to switch their pitchers to begin the extra-inning portion of April 12's resumed game. Junior Alyssa Malicki, who pitched from the fourth inning on in the earlier resumed game, got the ball again for game two while Wheaton brought in Gist. Those two would keep both offenses quiet as the game moved swiftly to the 11th inning.

In the Vikings' half of the 11th, junior Alyssa Aragon skied an infield pop that was misplayed by the Wheaton infield, giving the Vikings a base runner with the middle of their order up. Delivering the final blow of the unique afternoon, junior Rachael Feazelle drove one off the wall in right-center field as Aragon easily scored from first base, securing a 5-4 North Park win.

FINAL: North Park 5, Wheaton 4

Quick Hits:

  • Malicki tossed seven innings between today's two resumed games, allowing just one earned run while striking out three
  • Feazelle scorched a walkoff liner in the 11th inning
  • The Viking defense was perfect in today's seven innings of work
