CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago bested North Park 1-0 in Saturday night's crosstown matchup.Â
Defense reigned supreme in this back-and-forth contest that saw both sides combine for just 10 shots on goal. GK Calvin Walters of U-Chicago kept a clean sheet throughout the match with the help of a rock solid back line that held the Vikings to three shots on frame. On the other end of the field, North Park's Alfred Sward had a solid day in his own right highlighted by numerous difficult saves that kept the Vikings within striking distance. However, the one shot he'd like to take back wound up being the difference maker for the Maroons.Â
With 30 seconds to go in the 1st half, a shot from Richard Gillespie forced Sward to make a diving save that knocked the ball back into the box. Peyton Lane—fresh off a substitution—connected on the follow up strike to register the only goal of the match, propelling U-Chicago to a 10-4-1 record.Â
With the loss, the Vikings drop to 12-4-0 on the season. Following this non-conference matchup, they'll return to CCIW play next Saturday, October 30th against Augustana in what will be their final conference game of the regular season—which represents the chance to cap off an illustrious 8-0 record in the CCIW. Tune in at 3:30 PM to see the Vikings' attempt at running the table.Â
