CHICAGO, Ill. -- In the first round of the 2019 NCAA Men's Soccer Championships, North Park left no doubt in its 6-1 opening win over the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes on Saturday afternoon.
North Park got to work quickly in the fourth minute of play. As Pacific Lutheran held possession in its own side and attempted to clear, junior midfielder Erlend Kemkers cut the pass off and promptly moved the ball to junior midfielder Peder Olsen. Next, Olsen connected with sliding junior forward Shatil Khoury who found the back of the next for the Vikings' first goal of the NCAA Tournament.
This 1-0 lead for North Park would hold through the rest of the first half, as the Lutes looked to even the score.
Halftime: North Park 1, Pacific Lutheran 0
Not long into the second half of play, the Lutes put pressure on the Vikings with a 58th-minute goal. Zachary Manao sent in a free-kick cross to Zak Gregg, whose header snuck into the net for his 16th goal of the season.
However, North Park would not lose a step as sophomore midfielder Ulrik Lund skipped a pass from midfield to Olsen, who sent the ball forward to freshman midfielder William Sandkvist. Sandkvist ended the play with his first-career NCAA goal as the Vikings regained the lead in the 61st minute.
Sandkvist's goal sparked the Viking offense, as North Park added four more goals before the conclusion of the match.
Junior midfielder Gianfranco DeCarne marked his sixth goal of the season in the 71st minute and freshman midfielder Niclas Holgersson scored his fifth goal of the season shortly after in the 73rd minute. DeCarne's goal arrived after a follow-up shot, as the goalkeeper was not able to secure Kemkers's previous shot. Holgersson tallied his first-career NCAA Tournament goal off a throw-in from DeCarne, as the Vikings extended their lead to 4-1.
As the clock crept closer to zero, the Vikings had three players mark their first-career points. Junior midfielder Antwan Mousa connected with sophomore forward Patrick Knap in the 86th minute for Mousa's first-career assist, and assists from junior midfielder Alfredo Pichardo and sophomore midfielder Jonas Andersgaard led to defender Ollie Chell's first-career goal in the 88th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Mathias Stulen saved four shots on the day, as the support of the NPU defense allowed just nine shots all day en route to a 6-1 first-round victory.
