Vikings Shut Out Hornets in Home Opener

CHICAGO–The North Park men's soccer team captured its second straight shutout victory of the season defeating the Kalamazoo Hornets, 2-0, at the Holmgren Athletic Complex on Wednesday evening.

The match was scoreless until the 38th minute.  In the 38th minute, freshman Patrick Knap connected on his first career goal off an assist by Angel Barriga to put the Vikings on the board 1-0.  A few minutes later, freshman Benjamin Nygaard marked his second goal of the season, giving the Vikings a 2-0 lead going into the second half.

After one half of play: Vikings 2, Hornets 0

The Vikings and the Hornets went scoreless in the second half,  as the Vikings outshot the Hornets 22 to 8 and 10 to 4 shots on goal. NPU outshot Kalamazoo in the first half 14 to 5.  Sophomore midfielder Peder Olsen led North Park with four shots and two were on goal.  Khoury and Joachim Hoff were close behind, both with three shots.

The always-tough North Park defense showcased itself yet again as the Vikings allowed just 8 shots tonight. Underclassmen Mathias Stulen and Edin Sabovic were perfect in net, tallying 4 saves in rainy conditions. Stulen snagged 3, and Sabovic marked his first in a Viking uniform with just over a minute to go in the contest.

The Vikings conclude their homestand with a rematch of last season's NCAA Final Four matchup with No. 3 ranked University of Chicago on Saturday, September 8th at 5 p.m.
