FB earns 33-7 victory at Anderson

Behind two rushing touchdowns from senior running back Enrique Menendez and 10 tackles from senior Chaun Maiava, North Park racked up just over 400 yards of offense in a 33-7 season-opening victory over host Anderson University – their second-straight in the last two meetings – Saturday night in Indiana.

Menedez burst for 100 yards on 27 carries and put North Park ahead 16-0 and 30-0 with runs of four yards and 23 yards respectively. After the Vikes drew first blood on a one-yard run from Frank Mauigoa which ended an eight-play, 32-yard drive with 6:52 left in the first quarter, NPU's defense came up with a safety when Mark Mamola made a huge tackle on Anderson's Johnny Ovalle two yards into the end zone.

Things stayed that way through the rest of the first half and into the break before NPU broke the game open in the third. Menedez' four-yard scamper ending a 57-yard drive put NPU ahead 16-0 with 9:30 left in the third quarter and the Vikes commanded a 23-point advantage when junior quarterback Anthony DiNardo, who finished a near perfect 8 of 9 for 75 yards, found Hunter Hinkel for a 24-yard strike at the just over three minutes later.

Along with the offensive sparkles, the defense sparkled just as much holding AU's offense to only four yards rushing and a 184 total yards. Quentin Voce finished with six solo tackles while KJ Joseph, Matt DiFecchio and Jalen Williams all had four. Dalton McKay also swiped an interception and Maiava had one fumble recovery.

North Park finished out the scoring in the fourth when Alexis Santillan booted a 34-yard field goal ending a six-play, 21-yard drive with 11:12 left before AU scored its lone TD of the game on a 24-yard pass play.

Mauigoa split time with DiNardo at the quarterback position and completed 16 of his 21 passes for 129 yards. Menendez also had four catches for 48 yards and Hinkel had three catches for 34 yards.

North Park (1-0) returns to action Saturday when it travels to Fremont, Nebraska for a 1 p.m. contest with Midland University.
