Vikes upend Benedictine 3-0

In only the first game of the season, North Park put together what could later be deemed a 'statement' victory Friday night.

The Vikes fired 14 total shots, eight on goal, and rolled to a 3-0 win over visiting Benedictine University, which came into the non-conference matchup ranked No. 14 nationally in the preseason.

Freshman Erik Lundeen wowed the crowd of just over 1,000 fans as his first collegiate goal was sandwiched in between two impressive tallies from Vikes' veterans Carel Kawele Kuzona and Matias Warp.

After Kuzona buried a shot in the bottom left corner of the goal off a Lundeen assist in the seventh minute, it was Lundeen's turn for the spotlight as he received a through ball from the top left wing off Arkadiusz Szlachta and put away the shot in the top right corner of the net at the 36:38 mark.

North Park's defense was also solid as it shut down BU's offense and held the visitors to only four shots in the first half and 10 total for the match.

Warp's goal came in the 58th minute when he buried a free kick in the far left side of the goal after it ricocheted off a BU defender and into the goal. Warp finished with a game-high five shots, while both Kuzona and Lundeen had two each. NP also went as many as six deep into its bench and a total of 18 Vikings saw playing time. Keeper Mathias Stulen earned the win as he made two saves.

North Park (1-0) resumes non-conference action Monday when it hosts Whitworh University for a 2 p.m. Labor Day matinee.
