A clean sweep in three-straight doubles matches carried the Vikings to their third-straight win Sunday with a 6-3 win over host Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
"It was great to finally see all three doubles teams playing their best tennis on the same day," Vikings' head coach Karl Clifton-Soderstrom said. "We've put a lot of work into our doubles strategies and skills this spring, and it is really paying off in our match play."  Â
The No. 1 doubles tandem of Vilde Olvin and Monika Eiermann earned an 8-2 win over Alverno's Brooke McBain and Laeren Yates and Katie Chleboun and Larisa Leuze cruised to an 8-2 win as well, but McKenzie Harrison and Juviel Vinluan fought through a tough battle that later came to an 8-6 triumph.
"Our No.2 doubles team had to fight back from being down a break in the middle of the set," Clifton-Soderstrom said. "But their determination and focus came through in the end."
At No. 1 singles, Olvin earned a straight-set 6-2, 6-1 win over Brooke McBain and Eiermann followed suit with a 6-4, 6-4 win despite a slight illness.
"Moni was fighting back some illness and struggled some to play her usual style of intense ground stroke game," Clifton-Soderstrom said. "She adjusted her backhand, conserved energy and focused on winning a close match."
Harrison earned a straight-set 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, but Chleboun unfortunately suffered a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 setback at No. 4.
"Kenzie continues to show improvement and won a great match as she used her inside out forehand cross court as her main weapon," Clifton-Soderstrom said.
North Park ended the 2016-17 season winning four of their last five matches and finished the spring with a 4-2 record.
"What a great way to end the season for the team. It can be difficult to get the momentum back at the start of the spring season, but these women have really committed to hard work and, most of all, truly being teammates to one another," Clifton-Soderstrom said. "The constant support and encouragement of each member of the team for the others really brought a great competitive edge to these last four matches we played. The joy of playing together as a team has enabled more productive practices over the last two months and has allowed the coaches to really work at individual improvement. Assistant Coach Iveta Massarova has done outstanding work with each of the players all year, and it has been so good to see the team's abilities elevated because of her efforts. The team continues to improve, but this spring season gave us some great momentum going into the fall conference season."
