The North Park University Men's Basketball team capped off their hosted tournament against the Illinois Institute of Technology.Â
Starting the game out similar to their opening game of the season, the Vikings took a 12-6 lead thanks to a breakaway layup for Billy Kirby, followed up by a three-pointer from Matt Szuba. North Park's offense settled down for the next few minutes as IIT began a 14 point run that left NPU down 26-20. Jack Gurvey narrowed the IIT lead with a three-pointer, accompanied by back-to-back shots from Colin Lake.Â
Billy Kirby ended the scoring for the first half with another layup, narrowing the deficit to just 2 points.
North Park took advantage of some Blackburn College fouls late in the second half, making three of four free throws thanks to their double bonus.Â
As the clock ran down, North Park was fouled on an inbounding pass that brought Colin Lake to the line. Lake knocked down two shots and brought the Vikings to within one.
With 11 seconds left on the clock, Billy Kirby knocked down a jump shot, re-claiming the lead 69-68. Despite the efforts of North Park's defense, Illinois Institute's Malik Howze responded with a jump shot of his own, handing the Vikings their second loss of the season.
In North Park's opening weekend, Billy Kirby received All-Tournament team honors. Kirby pulled down 9 rebounds, tallied 27 points, swiped 4 passes, and had 3 assists.
North Park University (0-2) returns to action on another home contest Tuesday at 7 PM against the University of Chicago.Â
