VIkings defeat St. Mary's 3-1

Woodley makes key save on second half penalty kick

While it took only 26 seconds for North Park to tally the first goal against visiting St. Mary's University Sunday afternoon, it was keeper Wesley Woodley that kept them in contention for the victory.

With North Park clinging to a 2-1 lead early in the second half, a scuffle for the ball took place in the goal mouth off a long throw in from the right side which led to a penalty kick for SMU's Brett Heimerdinger in the 62nd minute. But quick on his reflexes, Woodley made a diving stop to his right to preserve the one-goal lead, which later became a two-goal advantage and North Park's second-straight win to start the season.

Gianfranco DeCarne's tally off a Marrion Alvaro assist in the opening minute gave the hosts the early advantage. They then moved it to a 2-0 lead after Gustav Leander scored his third goal in two games on a DeCarne assist in the 13th minute. St. Mary's responded eight minutes later when Sean Butcher scored off a rebound, but thanks to Woodley's superb defense and an Emil Eriksson tally unassisted in the 72nd minute the Vikings earned the win.

North Park controlled the tempo throughout the match as was evident in their 14-8 total shots advantage, including a 10-3 margin in shots on goal. In addition to his PK save, Woodley also made one other save in the second half in his second complete game.

The Vikings (2-0) return to action Friday night when they host the University of Chicago for a 7 p.m. match.
