The one-two punch of Michal Walaszek and Gianfranco DeCarne proved to be the key ingredient for North Park Wednesday night.
Looking to rebound from a tough setback to visiting North Central College last week, the No. 24 nationally-ranked Vikings responded in a big way by using the offensive firepower of Walaszek and Gianfranco among others to generate 21 total shots in a 6-2 victory over visiting Illinois Wesleyan which put NP in a four-way first place tie in the CCIW.
After both teams tallied a goal – for NP a Pedram Tahmi-Masoleh penalty kick and IWU a Dino Karas' unassisted shot – in the opening 48 minutes, North Park immediately came back with the go-ahead score when DeCarne took a Ricky Pimentel offering and put it in the bottom right corner of the net. DeCarne then found Chase Lennartz in the 57th minute to push NP's lead to 3-1 and Walaszek received a pass from keeper Christopher Tomuta which upped the advantage to 4-1.
Illinois Wesleyan tried to fight its way back with another goal in the 69th minute – via a Drake Leary tally – but NP's offense continued its onslaught as they buried two more goals in the final 13 minutes. Pimentel connected off a Lennartz pass from 10 yards out and Marcus Ollton put away a Kyle Robson through ball in the bottom left corner with 16 seconds remaining.
North Park, which extended its streak to 13 seasons of 10 or more victories (10-3, 2-1), returns to action Friday night when it hosts UC-Santa Cruz for a 7 p.m. match.
