Saturday's season- and home-opener had a little bit of everything for the avid women's basketball fan.
North Park mixed up its plays nicely, forced some key turnovers and knocked down big baskets from the perimeter when it needed to during a 58-45 victory over the Comets.
Most notably though, North Park helped raise money for an important cause as the Vikings garnered over $200 in a fundraiser for Lauren Hill, the brave freshman forward from Mount St. Joseph's College, who is suffering from a rare form of brain cancer.
Sophomore guard Liz Rehberger scored a game-high 20 points, only the second game of her two-year career where she's had 20 or more, as she knocked down four shots, including two three-pointers and was 10 of 15 from the free throw line.
North Park forced 17 turnovers, 16 of which were created off steals, and the Vikings scored 24 points off the Olivet mistakes to push their lead to as much as 15 midway through the second half on a lay-up from Rehberger. The Vikings also had eight fast break points, and despite being out-scored 38-20 inside, their defense held Olivet to only 1 of 15 shooting from the three-point line.
In a game that saw five ties and eight lead changes between the squads in the first half, North Park overcame a woeful shooting first half to knock down 11 shots in the second, including 4 of 9 from the three-point line to earn their first win of the season.
Senior guard Annie Shain added 10 points and six rebounds, while junior Nicole Kruckman tallied nine points to go along with four rebounds. Stefanie Lang led Olivet with a double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds.
NP returns to action next Tuesday when it travels to Notre Dame, Indiana for a 6:30 p.m. contest with St. Mary's College.
