Men's Soccer upends Benedictine 3-0

Anderson scores game-winner late in first half

Give North Park's offense just a little bit of daylight, and they'll take care of things quick.

After a close-knit opening 30 minutes of the Vikings season- and home-opener Friday night with visiting Benedictine, North Park put on a shooting showcase, firing 14 total in a 3-0 win over the Eagles.

Two of NP's three goals came off a rebound, and its defense clamped down hard on Benedictine's midfield, stifling the visitors to only one shot after halftime.

Sophomore midfielder Rick Anderson put away the game winner in the 35th minute when he scored off a rebounded shot from freshman forward Kebba Sanyang. Sanyang's shot bounced off the crossbar and literally into the feet of Anderson, who in turn struck a powerful shot in the bottom right corner of the net.

Of North Park's 14 shots, five were on goal, and a total of 25 players saw the field in the dominating performance for the hosts.

NP's second and third tally came almost five minutes apart in the second half. After Diego Lashlee set up a perfect corner kick to freshman Marcus Ollton for the game's second score in the 47th minute, junior Przemyslaw Zabielski put away another rebounded shot off right side. Felipe Mattar picked up the free kick rebound and tossed a perfect ball back to Zabielski for the tally.

Benedictine struggled to find its offensive groove unfortunately. The Eagles did create a shot on goal from Ante Markotic late in the second half, but couldn't generate much else.

North Park (1-0) returns to action Monday morning when it hosts St. Mary's of Minnesota for an 11 a.m. contest.
