Vikings defeat Saint John's 69-62

Robinson scores 30 in NP's seventh win of season

Jordan Robinson has been waiting to have a breakout game like this.

Leading up to Saturday's matchup with visiting Saint John's University, the freshman forward has been averaging nearly 15 points per game (14.6) and has recorded three games of 20 or more points.

The Schaumburg native put that all to rest as he poured in a game-high 30 points in leading the Vikings to a 69-62 victory over the Johnnies which put North Park at 7-2, its best start under third-year head coach Tom Slyder and the best start for a Vikings team since the 2008-09 season.

Robinson's 30 points didn't come easy either. The swarming defense of the Johnnies forced him to create shots off the dribble and knock down crucial baskets coming off screens. North Park led by as many as 16 points in the first half as it knocked down half of its shots (17 of 34), but Saint John's wasn't about to go away quietly as the visitors mounted a comeback in the second half.

With NP leading 54-41 after a three-pointer from Robinson at the 13-minute mark, Saint John's pieced together an 11-0 scoring run to close the deficit down to two after a 1 of 2 free throws from Mitchell Kuck. But a quick transition lay-up from Robinson, coupled with 3 of 4 free throws from sophomore Juwan Henry, put the Vikings back in command at 59-54. The Johnnies did manage to trim the deficit back to 60-59, but North Park withstood the rally after Henry and Robinson connected on back-to-back jumpers.

Along with Robinson, both Henry and freshman Colin Lake finished in double-figure scoring with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Robinson added nine rebounds and Michael Hutchinson scored six points and had eight rebounds. Alex Schmitt led Saint John's with 23 points.

North Park returns to action Tuesday, Dec. 30 when it hosts St. Mary's of Minnesota for a 4 p.m. contest.
