It didn't take long for Shelby Switzer to etch her name in the North Park volleyball record book and rank among the program's elite.

Switzer became only the second player in the program ever to notch 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career as she earned All-Tournament team honors at the Kalamazoo College Hornet Invite Friday and Saturday in Michigan.

Needing only 33 digs to eclipse he mark, Switzer finished the three-match tournament with 36 digs to bring her four-year total to 1,003. In addition, she finished with 44 kills and upped her career total to 1,208 as she inched ever so closer to the all-time mark of 1,356 set by Mallory Bieritz.

"Words can't describe just what Shelby has done and continues to do for our program," North Park head coach Tim Walenga said. "It's just simply remarkable how strong of a player she is. The sky's the limit for her this season as I only see her continuing to improve on her already impressive numbers."

North Park finished 0-3 at the tournament, but faced some top competition and didn't back down. Of the three matches, NP took two of them to four sets. Switzer finished the final match against Manchester University with a double-double of 12 kills and 17 digs.

"We played very well despite our results," Walenga said. "The ladies really showed poise throughout each match and played with a lot of heart. The competition level was high and it's definitely prepared us for the rest of the rigorous season ahead. We're battle-tested."

Switzer averaged 4.0 kills per set and nearly a serving ace per set (0.82). What's more is the senior outside hitter from Phoenix, Arizona was nearly flawless in serve receive as she committed only two errors in 82 total attempts for a .976 receiving percentage. She also finished with a 3.27 digs average.

North Park returns to action this weekend when it hosts the NPU Clash Friday and Saturday. The Vikings open the tournament with Aurora University at 2 p.m.
