2012 NCAA Division III National Meet Qualifiers

David Johansson is making quite a name for himself in his first year as an athlete for the North Park track and field team.

Johansson, a native of Sweden, qualified for the NCAA Division III National meet in the javelin, which will be hosted at Burns Stadium in Claremont, California this coming weekend May 24-26.

“This is an extraordinary accomplishment,” North Park head coach Geoff Masanet said. “Dave has done a great job so far this season and he has a great chance of taking a national championship in the javelin.”

Johansson is ranked 17th going into the meet nationally, but he has already proven he can compete with the best in the country at the Division III level after already capturing a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship. What's more, is he's learning from one of the best javelin competitors in North Park history in coach Lars Tenglin, who only last year took second in the javelin at the NCAA Division III National meet.

“Having Lars as a coach is great mentoring for David,” Masanet said. “He's learned a lot from him in a short amount of time being just a freshman.”
