The North Park women's rowing team won the varsity eight race at its own North Shore Challenge Saturday morning in Skokie.

North Park, which was behind midway through the race against the University of Chicago, gained ground in the final 1/3 and passed the Maroons' boat to win the race by a three-second margin (7:30-7:33).

“It was a quite a finish,” North Park rowing coach Ally Koubsky said. “Our girls fought hard and put in a solid effort to pull out this victory. I couldn't be more proud of how well we performed. It was excellent.”

In the preliminary races, North Park took second to the University of Chicago in Heat 1, recording a time of 7:37 to Chicago's 7:34, while NP's novice eight boat took fourth in heat 2 of its race with a time of 9:25.

“Overall, I thought we did a good job,” Koubsky said. “It would've been good for our novice boats to qualify for the finals, but they still fought hard to get a good finish.”

North Park returns to action this weekend when it competes in the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Championships in Harrisburg, PA.
