The North Park track and field team had a strong showing at the Cougar Invitational, hosted by Concordia University Chicago Saturday afternoon.
The women's team brought back a pair of event championships, while the men's team scored a first place finish in the javelin and a third-place run in the 200-meter dash.
“This was a good meet for us,” North Park head coach
Geoff Masanet said. “We had some good performances and our athletes' fitness is almost completely where it needs to be only two weeks away from the conference meet.”
Sophomore
Shanikca Watson won the long jump with a leap of 5.39 meters, while senior
Julienne Samuels took first in the triple jump with a leap of 10.27 meters. Junior
Brittany McCline, who had two straight victories in the javelin in previous meets, took third with a toss of 34.81 meters for the women's team.
“It was good throw for Brittany,” Masanet said. “Obviously we would've liked to see her get first, but she did an exceptional job taking third.”
On the men's side, freshman
David Johansson took first in the javelin with a toss of 56.68 meters, and sophomore
Gabe Nash was third in the 200 meters with a time of 22.78 seconds.
North Park returns to action this Friday when it competes at the Benedictine Twilight Relays in Lisle, IL.
