A tenth of a second doesn't mean much in most things in life, but when it comes to track and field, it can mean the difference between finishing first or coming in second.
North Park freshman
Willie Sawyer witnessed that first hand when it came down to himself and Merrell Davis of Concordia Chicago in the finals of 55-meter dash. Sawyer missed taking first place by just a tenth of second as Davis edged him for the victory 6.55-6.56.
“It was so close,” North Park head track and field coach
Geoff Masanet said. “But Willie ran a heck of a race and did an excellent job. He will only get better in that event as the season goes along.”
Sawyer's teammate, sophomore
Gabe Nash, took sixth in the dash with a time of 6.77 seconds as part of a solid day all around for the North Park track and field team at the UW-Parkside Open Saturday in Wisconsin.
“This was another great test for our teams,” Masanet said. “We had a lot strong performances and I was happy to see everyone make some improvements.”
Sawyer took home another top-three finish in the 200-meter dash where he came in third with a 22.64.1 time followed by Nash in seventh with a 23.16.1. Other top-five performances for the men's team included third-place finish for
Chris Mullen in the shot put where he had a toss of 13.44 meters, and
David Johansson, who took fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 13.21 meters.
On the women's side, sophomore
Shanicka Watson came out strong once again in the long jump as she took third with a jump of 4.92 meters, while sophomore
Olivia Dwight was eighth in the weight throw with a toss of 11.05 meters.
North Park returns to action this weekend when it competes in the Chicagoland Championships hosted by North Central College.
