If
Willie Sawyer keeps this up, there's no telling how far the speedy freshman will go this year for the North Park track and field team.
Sawyer once again performed at his best in the Chicagoland Championships hosted by North Central College in Naperville this weekend as he took home a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.69 seconds. His effort in the event was just what the Vikings needed to beat NCAA Division I DePaul University in the overall team standings by three points.
“Willie's a great athlete,” North Park head coach
Geoff Masanet said. “He's shaping up to have a great season both indoors and outdoors. He's only going to continue to get better.”
Both Sawyer and sophomore
Gabe Nash went head-to-head in the 60-meter dash where they both took home top-ten finishes with Sawyer edging his teammate 7.13 seconds to 7.30 seconds for seventh and eighth place, respectively.
On the women's side, current North Park women's soccer athletes
Emma Lundeen and
Anika Johnson utilized their speed and athleticism from the fall season to help the Vikings' 4x200-meter relay team to an eighth-place finish with a time of 1:55.89.
Julienne Samuels and
Shanicka Watson were the third and fourth runners in the event.
“We're just continuing to get better and working hard to improve this team every week out,” Masanet said. “We're seeing some great times and performances from both teams and I'm really proud of our athletes.”
North Park returns to action this weekend when it travels back to Naperville to compete in the North Central Cardinal Classic Friday at 5 p.m.
